Protections for animals raised for food is more important than ever. Federal legislation and regulations are important to ensure that all animals raised for food are treated humanely with minimum standards of care.
American egg factory farms cram more than 90 percent of the country's 280 million egg-laying hens into barren cages so small the birds can't even spread their wings. Pigs, one of the smartest animals on Earth, are crammed into tiny "gestation crates" and are immobile and unable to move virtually their entire lives. We're working to pass legislation and enact regulations to end cruelty and suffering of animals raised for food.
We have made a lot of strides in improving the lives of farm animals, especially through state laws and ballot initiatives. And as a result, those with a vested interest in keeping the status quo have challenged our success. One of our biggest fights is protecting Proposition 12, the popular California ballot initiative setting in-state standards for the production and sale of certain egg, veal and pork products. But those intent on overturning Proposition 12 have been so overzealous in their attacks, that their effort may potentially overturn any state sales regulation aimed at addressing animal welfare.
We will not let this stand. Learn more here about our fight and we hope you will stand with us!
