Humane Society Legislative Fund Endorses Russ Feingold for Election to U.S. Senate in Wisconsin

WASHINGTON (September 29, 2016)—The Humane Society Legislative Fund, the nation’s leading political advocacy organization for animal welfare, announces its endorsement of Russ Feingold, D-Wisconsin, for election to the U.S. Senate. Citing his strong leadership and advocacy on animal protection policies, the HSLF urges voters in Wisconsin to support Feingold in November’s general election.

Russ Feingold has a long history of support for animal protection, working in the U.S. Senate and throughout his career in public service to protect animals from cruelty and abuse. As United States Special Representative for the African Great Lakes Region and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Feingold worked extensively to protect elephants from poaching and wildlife trafficking.

“During his extensive career in public service, Russ Feingold has proven his commitment to animal protection,” said Sara Amundson, executive director of the HSLF. “His lengthy record on the wide range of issues confronting animals speaks to that commitment. Voters in Wisconsin who care about the humane treatment of animals should support Russ Feingold for election.”

During his time in Congress, Feingold:

  • Introduced the Crane Conservation Act (S. 197) to assist in the conservation of imperiled cranes;
  • Cosponsored the Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2009 (S. 1076) requiring accurate labeling on all fur-trimmed apparel;
  • Cosponsored the Pet Safety and Protection Act (S. 714) to prohibit unscrupulous “Class B dealers” from funneling random-source dogs and cats into laboratory experiments;
  • Cosponsored the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act (S. 382) to create felony-level penalties for dogfighting and cockfighting activities.

Humane Society Legislative Fund Endorses Rep. Jeff Denham for Re-Election to California’s 10th Congressional District

WASHINGTON (September 29, 2016)—The Humane Society Legislative Fund, the nation’s leading political advocacy organization for animal welfare, announces its endorsement of Rep. Jeff Denham, R-California, for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Citing his strong leadership and advocacy on animal protection policies, the HSLF urges voters in California’s 10th Congressional District to support Rep. Denham for re-election.

Jeff Denham is a prominent voice in Congress on animal welfare, introducing the Pets on Trains Act to create a pilot program to allow Amtrak customers to bring their pets with them while traveling. He collaborated with animal welfare groups and the egg industry to advocate for improved treatment of laying hens—an effort that helped trigger a wave of major food retailers, from Safeway to McDonald’s to Walmart—to go cage free. And he’s worked to strengthen the federal penalties for illegal animal fighting. He was the leader of the effort to defeat a dangerous amendment, advanced by Rep. Steve King of Iowa, to unwind state laws and regulations to promote animal welfare in agriculture.

In addition to his other efforts in the 114th Congress, Rep. Denham:

  • Cosponsored the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act (H.R. 1258) to protect the human and animal victims of domestic violence and support the work of battered women’s shelters to accommodate pets;
  • Cosponsored the Prevent Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act (H.R. 2293) to make malicious animal cruelty a crime on federal property and in interstate commerce, and complement the state anti-cruelty laws;
  • Cosponsored the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act (H.R. 3268) to strengthen the federal law against the “soring” of show horses—using caustic chemicals and other painful substances to injure the horses’ hooves and legs to induce a high-stepping gait.

“Congressman Denham is a strong animal welfare advocate and a powerful voice within the Republican caucus for common sense animal welfare standards,” said Wayne Pacelle, executive vice president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. “I hope voters in the 10th Congressional District reward him for his service by casting votes for him.”

Humane Society Legislative Fund Endorses Rep. Ryan Costello for Re-Election to Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District

WASHINGTON (September 28, 2016)—The Humane Society Legislative Fund, the nation’s leading political advocacy organization for animal welfare, announces its endorsement of Rep. Ryan Costello, R-Pennsylvania, for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Citing his strong leadership and advocacy on animal protection policies, the HSLF urges voters in Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District to support Rep. Costello for re-election.

“Rep. Costello believes in the inherent value of the human-animal connection,” said Sara Amundson, executive director of the HSLF. “He’s been a reliable voice for animal protection policies during his time in Congress. Voters in the 6th District who care about the humane treatment of animals should support Ryan Costello for re-election.”

The HSLF publishes an annual Humane Scorecard to give voters a snapshot of every federal legislator's record on animal protection issues; Rep. Costello received a perfect score of “100” in the Midterm Report for the 114th Congress.

In the 114th Congress, Rep. Costello:

  • Led on an amendment to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption;
  • Cosponsored the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act (H.R. 1258) to protect the human and animal victims of domestic violence and support the work of battered women’s shelters to accommodate pets;
  • Cosponsored the Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 2858) to phase out the testing of cosmetics on live animals and the sale of newly animal-tested cosmetics;
  • Cosponsored the Prevent Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act (H.R. 2293) to make malicious animal cruelty a crime on federal property and in interstate commerce, and complement the state anti-cruelty laws;
  • Cosponsored the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act (H.R. 3268) to strengthen the federal law against the “soring” of show horses—using caustic chemicals and other painful substances to injure the horses’ hooves and legs to induce a high-stepping gait;
  • Cosponsored the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act (H.R. 1942) to prohibit the slaughter and export of horses for human consumption overseas;
  • Supported funding for enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act, Horse Protection Act, Humane Methods of Slaughter Act and federal animal fighting law, as well as for programs to address the needs of animals in disasters and to ease a shortage of veterinarians in rural and inner-city areas and USDA positions through student loan forgiveness;
  • Opposed efforts to substantially weaken Endangered Species Act protections for wolves and other species.
