WASHINGTON (September 29, 2016)—The Humane Society Legislative Fund, the nation’s leading political advocacy organization for animal welfare, announces its endorsement of Rep. Jeff Denham, R-California, for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Citing his strong leadership and advocacy on animal protection policies, the HSLF urges voters in California’s 10th Congressional District to support Rep. Denham for re-election.
Jeff Denham is a prominent voice in Congress on animal welfare, introducing the Pets on Trains Act to create a pilot program to allow Amtrak customers to bring their pets with them while traveling. He collaborated with animal welfare groups and the egg industry to advocate for improved treatment of laying hens—an effort that helped trigger a wave of major food retailers, from Safeway to McDonald’s to Walmart—to go cage free. And he’s worked to strengthen the federal penalties for illegal animal fighting. He was the leader of the effort to defeat a dangerous amendment, advanced by Rep. Steve King of Iowa, to unwind state laws and regulations to promote animal welfare in agriculture.
In addition to his other efforts in the 114th Congress, Rep. Denham:
- Cosponsored the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act (H.R. 1258) to protect the human and animal victims of domestic violence and support the work of battered women’s shelters to accommodate pets;
- Cosponsored the Prevent Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act (H.R. 2293) to make malicious animal cruelty a crime on federal property and in interstate commerce, and complement the state anti-cruelty laws;
- Cosponsored the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act (H.R. 3268) to strengthen the federal law against the “soring” of show horses—using caustic chemicals and other painful substances to injure the horses’ hooves and legs to induce a high-stepping gait.
“Congressman Denham is a strong animal welfare advocate and a powerful voice within the Republican caucus for common sense animal welfare standards,” said Wayne Pacelle, executive vice president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. “I hope voters in the 10th Congressional District reward him for his service by casting votes for him.”
