Humane Society Legislative Fund endorses Representative Ken Calvert for re-election

WASHINGTON (September 23, 2024) – Today, the Humane Society Legislative Fund, the nation’s leading animal protection political organization, announced its endorsement of U.S. Representative Ken Calvert for re-election to California’s 41st District Congressional District.

“Ken Calvert has a long history of supporting critical animal protection measures, including moving science into the 21st century while saving taxpayer dollars, animal lives and encouraging innovation,” said Sara Amundson, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. “We need lawmakers like Ken Calvert in Congress. We urge Californians in the 41st District to re-elect this animal champion.”

Rep. Calvert is a sponsor of the Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 5399), a bill to phase out testing of cosmetics on live animals and sales of animal-tested cosmetics in the U.S. He is a member of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, which works to promote animal protection initiatives to other members of Congress.

Additional pro-animal actions taken by Rep. Calvert in the 118th Congress include:

  • Cosponsored the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 3475) to prohibit the reopening of horse slaughter plants in the U.S. and the export of American horses to slaughter for human consumption.
  • Cosponsored the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act (H.R. 3090) to crack down on “soring,” in which trainers deliberately inflict severe pain on the hooves and legs of Tennessee walking horses.
  • Sponsored the Humane and Existing Alternatives in Research and Testing Sciences (HEARTS) Act (H.R. 1024) to promote alternatives to using animals in research and testing in experiments funded by the National Institutes of Health.
