WASHINGTON (September 29, 2022)—Today the Humane Society Legislative Fund, the nation’s leading political advocacy organization for animal welfare, announced its endorsement of Dana Nessel for attorney general of Michigan. Attorneys general play a critical role in creating and enforcing animal protection laws at the state level and can assist prosecutors in cracking down on animal abusers.
“Attorney General Dana Nessel has demonstrated a deep commitment to animal protection and a state’s right to protect their citizens,” said Sara Amundson, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. “She led the effort to secure a joint amicus brief with other attorneys general supporting the strongest farm animal protection law in the country. The Humane Society Legislative Fund is proud to support Dana Nessel, and voters who care about the humane treatment of animals should back her re-election.”
Dana Nessel began her legal career as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office where she was a voice for the voiceless. Nessel understands the correlation between violence against animals and violence against people – and worked to prosecute both. In her tenure as Attorney General, Nessel has fought for the protection of animals from cruelty and abuse. Her accomplishments to-date include:
- Leading a multistate coalition of attorneys general in submitting an amicus brief urging the United States Supreme Court to protect the ability of states to protect farm animals within their borders.
- Releasing a formal opinion to protect dogs and other animals used in medical research.
- Protecting consumers by bringing awareness to puppy scams.
- Championing adoption of companion animals from shelters and recues.
The Humane Society Legislative Fund has consistently played a critical role in championing animal protection measures and supporting humane candidates in Michigan.
