Humane Society Legislative Fund and the Humane Society of the United States respond to GAO report on animal use in research

WASHINGTON (September 27, 2019)—In response to the release of a Government Accountability Office report on animal use in research, the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society Legislative Fund express our strong support for the establishment of an interagency workgroup to develop metrics to monitor the development and promotion of non-animal test methods and strategies. These metrics will be a valuable tool to track the successful uptake of new approaches and the related decrease in animal use and also point to areas where more work needs to be done to hold federal agencies accountable to their collective goal of reducing, refining and replacing animal use. This report and the recent Environmental Protection Agency announcement to eliminate animal testing by 2035 should prompt all agencies to release similar forward-thinking plans to ultimately end animal use and reliance.
