WASHINGTON (September 17, 2019)—Humane Society Legislative Fund and the Humane Society of the United States issued the following statement regarding the treatment of military working dogs in Jordan:
The recent coverage of the treatment of military working dogs overseas is disturbing, and we applaud Senator Grassley for looking into this further. The Department of State should not be sending dogs to war torn areas without ensuring there are agreed upon standards for their care. For decades, dogs have been our companions and protectors, performing devoted and necessary services. Military working dogs fulfill unique needs and should be treated as soldiers, not equipment. The United States government has a duty to do all that it can to ensure these canine soldiers receive the best treatment throughout their lives.
