WASHINGTON (June 20, 2019)—“Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed critical amendments to a funding package designed to protect several iconic species including elephants, lions and whales. We applaud Reps. Buchanan, Huffman, Blumenauer and Lieu for their leadership in ensuring that taxpayer dollars are not used by our government to issue permits to import elephant or lion trophies from Zimbabwe, Zambia or Tanzania,” said Sara Amundson, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. “In addition, funding to research and monitor species, like the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale, is necessary to ensure their survival. We applaud Rep. Moulton’s leadership in securing such funding and we thank Reps. Huffman, Serrano and Grijalva who helped defeat a provision which would have blocked federal funds from being used to implement consensus recommendations to save the North Atlantic right whale. With fewer than 420 of these whales left on earth, now is not the time to drop critical funding for this species.”
