One of my favorite places in Washington, D.C., is the National Mall, with its monuments and museums, its natural beauty and historical significance. It was even better than usual on Sunday, when I joined animal lovers and their dogs at the 2008 Humane Society Walk for the Animals. Benefiting the Washington Humane Society and The Humane Society of the United States, the walk raised more than $150,000 for programs to end pet homelessness through lifesaving adoption, humane education, and spay/neuter programs.
The event was hosted by Will Thomas of FOX 5, and I participated in judging the “Best Dressed Canine” contest along with D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh, WHS president Lisa LaFontaine, HSUS board member Andrew Weinstein, and Ned the Newshound from The Washington Post. I spoke to the two-legged and four-legged crowd about celebrating dogs and all the joy and enrichment they bring to our lives, and confronting the cruelties inflicted upon dogs by puppy mills, dogfighting, and other abusive industries.
