Humane Society Legislative Fund endorses Susie Lee for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District

WASHINGTON (July 2, 2018)—Today the Humane Society Legislative Fund, the nation’s leading political advocacy organization for animal welfare, announced its endorsement of Susie Lee for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District.

Having grown up in a family that often cared for stray dogs and cats, and given her career as a nonprofit leader, Lee has long understood the importance of protecting the vulnerable. She supports a wide variety of animal protection issues – particularly cracking down on animal fighting, wildlife poaching, and supporting new science to replace traditional animal testing.

"Susie Lee will be a true ally of commonsense animal protection measures in the U.S. House of Representatives," said Sara Amundson, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. "We encourage Nevadans to support her and send her to Congress to represent animal lovers in the 3rd district."

Among the federal animal welfare bills Lee has pledged to support are:

  • The Puppy Protection Act to upgrade standards of care for dogs in large-scale commercial breeding operations.
  • The Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act to make malicious animal cruelty a crime on federal property and in interstate commerce, and complement state anti-cruelty laws.
  • The Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act to prohibit the domestic slaughter, trade and import of dogs and cats for human consumption.
  • The Pet and Women Safety Act to protect the human and animal victims of domestic violence and support the work of domestic violence shelters to accommodate pets.
  • The Prevent All Soring Tactics Act to strengthen the federal law against the “soring” of Tennessee Walking horses in shows—using caustic chemicals and other painful substances to injure the horses’ hooves and legs to induce a high-stepping gait.
  • The Safeguard American Food Exports Act to prohibit the slaughter and export of horses for human consumption overseas.
  • The Humane Cosmetics Act to phase out the testing of cosmetics on live animals and the sale of newly animal-tested cosmetics.
